Hough Early Learning Center

  • LOCATION: Vancouver, WA
  • COMPLETED: 2015

The Hough Early Learning Center is located in a former community swimming pool facility. Extensive remodeling was completed on the 10,100 sq ft building to accommodate the Pre-K/Early Learning program.  Located adjacent to Hough Elementary School in downtown Vancouver, the center will provide pre-school for 60 kids, serving low-income families in the surrounding neighborhood.

The main educational area of the center is housed in what was previously the pool area.  Structural infill and a concrete slab create useable space for six classrooms and a central “living room” space.  Heavy timber, open web trusses in the pool area remain exposed, with Plexiglass filling the open spaces to provide acoustical barriers.  The building also houses administrative offices, meetings rooms, and a warming kitchen.

As is common in remodel projects, the project team faced unexpected challenges during construction.  Due to lack of maintenance while the building was unoccupied, along with some questionable design and construction methods, the team had to develop solutions to repair leaks and strengthen existing CMU walls to ensure the building was safe to occupy and that the client wouldn’t have maintenance issues after taking occupancy.
